The Jesus Prayer is a short, repetitive Christian prayer that says, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me." It is often used in silent meditation to focus on God's presence.
The Jesus Prayer is historically important because it has been a central practice in Eastern Orthodox Christianity for centuries. It is closely linked to the Hesychast tradition, a mystical movement that emphasized inner stillness and continuous prayer. Monks on Mount Athos and other spiritual centers used it as a way to seek deep union with God. Over time, it became a key part of Christian contemplative practice, influencing both Eastern and Western spiritual traditions.
This six-part course provides a basic introduction to the history, theology, and practical techniques of The Jesus Prayer. It includes an introductory survey, a mid-course survey, and a final survey.
