Intermediate Course on The Jesus Prayer

What is the Jesus Prayer?

The Jesus Prayer is a short, repetitive Christian prayer that says, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me." It is often used in silent meditation to focus on God's presence.

Why is it historically important?

The Jesus Prayer is historically important because it has been a central practice in Eastern Orthodox Christianity for centuries. It is closely linked to the Hesychast tradition, a mystical movement that emphasized inner stillness and continuous prayer. Monks on Mount Athos and other spiritual centers used it as a way to seek deep union with God. Over time, it became a key part of Christian contemplative practice, influencing both Eastern and Western spiritual traditions.

How to use this course

This six-part course provides a basic introduction to the history, theology, and practical techniques of The Jesus Prayer. It includes an introductory survey, a midpoint survey, and a final survey. By completing the course and taking these three surveys, you will help scientists study how The Jesus Prayer affects human psychology, spirituality, and behavior.

Great job completing the intake survey. Your foot is on the path!

This introductory course has been designed to be completed over a six-week period. At the beginning of the first week, please listen to teaching session 1 followed by practice session 1 in order to learn the essential techniques.

After this, please complete at least one practice session each day. At the beginning of the second week, please listen to teaching session 2 followed by practice session 2.

Continue this way week by week until you complete the six-part course.

It is perfectly acceptable to do more than one practice session per day. Just please make a note about how often you practiced when you take the midpoint survey and the final survey. The more you practice the prayer, the more transformative the experience will be for you.
